Assam’s Sonitpur District Set to Host SJVN’s 50 MW Solar Project

Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, conducted the groundbreaking ceremony today for a 50 MW Solar Project in Sonitpur, Assam, being developed by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a subsidiary of SJVN. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 291 crores, will be situated in Sitalmari village, Barsola Block, within the Dhekiajuli Revenue Sector of Sonitpur district.

Expected to generate 101 million units of green energy in its inaugural year, the project is projected to produce a cumulative energy output of about 2,319 million units over the next 25 years. The electricity generated will be supplied to Assam Power Development Corporation Limited at Rs. 3.92 per unit.

Present at the ceremony were various dignitaries including Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Ashok Singhal; MP, Tezpur, Shri Pallab Lochan Das; MLA, Barchalla, Shri Ganesh Kumar Limbu; Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, Shri Ajay Tewari; Director (Finance), SJVN, Shri Akhileshwar Singh; CEO, SGEL, Shri Ajay Singh; and MD, APDCL, Shri Rakesh Kumar.

SJVN’s Chairperson & Managing Director, Smt. Geeta Kapur, highlighted the company’s presence in Assam, mentioning the ongoing development of three solar projects totaling 320 MW capacity. Notably, the foundation stone for the 70 MW Solar Project in Dhubri, Assam, was laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on March 4, 2024.

SJVN Limited, a Mini Ratna- Category-I and Schedule – ’A’ Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, commenced operations on May 24, 1988. With a diverse portfolio spanning hydro, thermal, wind, solar, power trading, and transmission sectors, SJVN aims to achieve ambitious targets, including 25,000 MW installed capacity by 2030 and 50,000 MW installed capacity by 2040, aligning with the Government of India’s commitment to non-fossil fuel-based energy sources.
