Lebanese army forces were dispatched to a site in Saraain, Lebanon, following strikes by Israeli warplanes targeting Hezbollah facilities in the Bekaa Valley for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, according to security sources.
Israeli jets reportedly struck a Hezbollah facility deep within the Bekaa Valley, resulting in the death of at least one member of the Iran-backed group, as confirmed by sources within Lebanon.
The Israeli military stated that its fighter jets targeted “two Hezbollah military command centers” in the Baalbek area, in response to earlier rocket launches by Hezbollah towards northern Israel on the same day.
The escalation in violence signifies a resurgence in the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, running parallel to the ongoing Gaza war, raising concerns of a potential all-out conflict between the heavily armed factions.
In a retaliatory move, Hezbollah claimed to have launched over 100 Katyusha rockets at Israeli military posts at 7:00 a.m. local time, in response to Israeli shelling of the Bekaa Valley region the night before.
Monday’s Israeli strikes resulted in civilian casualties, with at least one person killed and several others wounded, including damage to infrastructure near the ancient Roman ruins of Baalbek.
The Israeli military defended its actions, stating that the strikes targeted sites in the Baalbek area used by Hezbollah to store weapons and strengthen its arsenal. Additional strikes hit a military compound in Khiam and terrorist infrastructure in Bint Jbeil, both towns in southern Lebanon.
The Bekaa Valley village of Nabi Chit also witnessed an airstrike, resulting in the death of a Hezbollah member and injuries to others, according to Lebanese sources.
The Bekaa Valley remains a stronghold for Hezbollah, situated near the Lebanese-Syrian border, making it a focal point in the ongoing conflict.
This recent surge in hostilities represents the most significant escalation since the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel, with violence fluctuating on a day-to-day basis, targeting a wider range of areas.
While most of the violence has been contained to border areas, there have been exceptions, including Israeli airstrikes in the Bekaa Valley and a drone strike in Beirut earlier this year.
Since October, Israeli strikes have claimed the lives of over 200 Hezbollah fighters and around 50 civilians in Lebanon, while attacks from Lebanon into Israel have resulted in the deaths of a dozen Israeli soldiers and six civilians. The escalating conflict has prompted tens of thousands of Israelis and Lebanese to flee their homes along both sides of the border.
