Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, popularly known as ‘Prachanda’, secured a vote of confidence in Parliament on Wednesday amidst ongoing political turbulence in the country.
Prachanda, aged 69 and a former guerrilla leader representing the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), which stands as the third-largest party in the House of Representatives (HoR), garnered 157 votes out of the 275-member House of Representatives.
The confidence vote follows Prachanda’s recent departure from the Nepali Congress and the formation of a new alliance with the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist).
This marks Prachanda’s third confidence vote since assuming the prime ministership in December 2022, highlighting the challenges of maintaining political stability in Nepal’s ever-evolving landscape.
Under constitutional provisions, a prime minister is required to seek a vote of confidence following the withdrawal of support from a coalition ally.
