IRDAI Removes Age Limit, Allowing Anyone to Buy Health Insurance in India

Great news for everyone in India! You can now buy health insurance regardless of your age. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has abolished the maximum age limit of 65, making health insurance more inclusive and accessible to all.

Previously, people were only allowed to purchase new insurance policies until the age of 65. However, as of April 1, anyone can buy a new health insurance policy, regardless of their age.

What does this mean for you?

1. More people can get health insurance coverage and protect themselves financially from unexpected medical expenses.
2. Insurance companies are now required to offer plans for all ages – seniors, children, and families cannot be denied coverage.
3. Pre-existing health conditions like cancer or heart disease cannot be used as a reason to reject your application.

But that’s not all! Here are some additional benefits:

1. You have the option to pay your premiums in installments to make it easier on your budget.
2. Traditional Indian medicine systems like Ayurveda or Yoga are now covered by insurance with no limits on the insured sum.
3. If you have a policy that covers benefits such as hospitalization, you can make claims with different insurance companies for the same illness, giving you more options.
4. Seniors will have a special channel dedicated to addressing their complaints and claims for faster and better service.

The IRDAI notification also allows insurers to offer premium payment in installments for policyholders’ convenience. Travel policies will only be offered by general and health insurers.

Furthermore, there is no limit on coverage for AYUSH treatments under systems like Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy – they will receive coverage up to the insured sum without any cap.

Lastly, the proposed regulation aims at handling senior citizens’ complaints and claims through a specialized channel tailored specifically toward their needs for better responsiveness and service.

With these changes, health insurance in India becomes more comprehensive, accessible, and flexible, ensuring that everyone can secure the protection they need for their well-being.
