India’s Air Defence Capabilities Under Scrutiny Following Israel’s Intercept of Iranian Missiles

India’s air defence capabilities are being questioned following Israel’s successful interception of Iranian missiles. The country is taking steps to bolster its arsenal with new systems.

During the recent conflict, Israel managed to intercept hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones fired by Iran. This showcased the effectiveness of Israel’s multilayered air defence network and has brought attention to India’s preparedness to defend against airborne threats. The Indian armed forces have a range of systems capable of countering aerial threats, including enemy missiles, fighter jets, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

India has been actively developing its defence systems, such as ballistic missile defence (BMD) capabilities, the deployment of the S-400 air defence missile systems, and the use of medium-range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) systems developed in collaboration with Israel.

Other air defence weapons in India’s arsenal include the Israeli SpyDer, Soviet-origin systems like Pechora, OSA-AK, Tunguska, Strela, and Shilka, as well as the Zu-23-2B anti-aircraft guns, upgraded L-70 anti-aircraft guns, and the Igla MANPADS.

One of India’s latest acquisitions is the S-400 missile system from Russia, which has a maximum range of 400km. India has also made significant advancements in developing intercept systems to destroy hostile missiles within and outside the atmosphere.

The Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested the AD-1 long-range interceptor missile designed for both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception of ballistic missiles. DRDO is also working on developing an indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile system called Project Kusha, which will have a maximum range of 350km.

India has recognized the importance of a robust air defence architecture in light of recent conflicts and developments globally. Air Marshal Anil Chopra (retd), the former director general of the Centre for Air Power Studies, highlights the need for India to accelerate the design, development, and production of indigenous air defence systems to cover its vast territory.

In terms of Israel’s air defence systems, they rely on weapons such as the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Patriot, and Arrow. These systems have proven their effectiveness in intercepting rocket salvos and protecting Israeli cities.

India is actively working on strengthening its air defence capabilities. The Defence Ministry recently signed contracts worth ₹39,125 crore, including agreements with Larsen & Toubro for close-in weapon systems and high-power radars. The Indian Army has also begun the induction of the indigenous Akashteer system, an automated air defence control and reporting system that enhances the army’s air defence mechanisms through digitization.

With the increasing significance of air defence in today’s world, India is committed to improving its capabilities to protect its vital assets and ensure national security.
